A Cognitive Analysis of the Persian Preposition "be" in children of Age Group B

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A radial network is a model for analyzing the semantic structure of words, in which meanings are organized around a central or prototypical core. This study presents a cognitive analysis of the Persian preposition be (“to”) in children’s speech within the framework of cognitive semantics and the radial network approach.
METHODOLOGY: Based on Bruner’s theory of language development (1995), the research employs a descriptive–analytical method and analyzes speech data collected through random sampling from 40 children aged 6 to 9 years in a school in District 2 of Tehran.
FINDINGS: children first acquire the prototypical meaning of be, and as their cognitive development progresses, its network of related meanings becomes more complex. The most frequent prototypical meanings are “movement toward a goal or destination” and “transfer.” The analysis also reveals a clear conceptual relationship between prototypical and extended meanings, such that “attachment or connection” develops from “movement toward a destination,” and “addressing” is conceptually related to “transfer.”
CONCLUSION: These results align with Bruner’s stages of language development and emphasize the role of symbolic representation in language learning. Despite limitations such as the small sample size and the complexity of radial network analysis, the study offers useful insights for future research and the design of more effective educational and language teaching programs.
